"Group pushes forward on Gresham redemption Center"

Excerpt from the story that highlights a redemption center that would provide a centralized location for collecting used beverage containers:

"...City Councilor Shirley Craddick says she and several fellow councilors are optimistic that an agreement can be reached.

“I think the Legislature made a great decision in supporting this,” she says, “for a centralized place to take recycling” containers. “We’d love to be the first place to have a center like this.”

The idea, Craddick notes, fits within the city’s goal of being a model “green” city.

“We want to be a sustainable city,” she says, noting that several city initiatives and an Oregon cities’ climate protection agreement supported by Mayor Shane Bemis set the tone for the city’s green goals. “That’s the beginning of our push to becoming an environmentally supportive city...”

Gresham Outlook

Gresham City Councilor Shirley Craddick... filed for District 1 on Thursday, Sept. 10 – the first day to file for the May primary election.

Metro Councilor Rod Parks now represents District 1, but can’t run for re-election because of term limits. The district stretches from East Portland to north Clackamas County, including Gresham, Troutdale, Wood Village, Fairview, Damascus, Happy Valley and Maywood Park.

Craddick... vowed to focus on economic development efforts in East Multnomah County.

“Land use is what got me into politics,” she said, “and it continues to be an interest of mine, as is the environment. Land-use planning and transportation decisions have a huge impact on a regional economy.”

As a Gresham city councilor, she serves as the alternate on the Metro Policy Advisory Board Committee.

“I’m fully comfortable with the role. I think I could sit on the council tomorrow,” she said.

A retired registered dietician and health researcher, Craddick was elected to the City Council in 2004 and re-elected last year.

Gresham City Councilor Shirley Craddick... filed Thursday for the District 1 seat now held by Gresham farmer Rod Park, who is prevented by term limits from serving another four years.

The district includes Fairview, Gresham, Happy Valley, Maywood Park, Troutdale, Wood Village, Damascus and portions of East Portland.

Craddick is a retired registered dietitian and health researcher who has served on the Gresham Council for the past five years...

The 2010 election potentially could bring significant change to Metro, as four of seven council positions and the auditor's position are up for election.

Metro is the regional government that coordinates transportation and land-use planning in Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington counties. Metro also operates the Oregon Zoo and some of the area's leading convention centers and performance halls. It oversees garbage disposal and recycling in the region.
