FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 9, 2009

Shirley Craddick, Gresham City Councilor since 2005, has filed for Metro Council, District #1.

“I am honored that the citizens of Gresham have elected me twice to the Gresham City Council.  During my five years experience on the City Council, I have been actively involved in Metro, attending meetings, establishing relationships with Metro Councilors and staff along with other jurisdiction representatives.  As City Councilor I have worked hard to help make Gresham the city where ‘businesses want to locate and people want to live.’  I am qualified and motivated to represent the citizens that reside in District #1 with dedication, knowledge and integrity.  I consider myself a public servant, not a politician.”

Council member Craddick works closely with Metro in her role as City Council member and serves as the alternate on the Metro Policy Advisory Board Committee (MPAC).  She emphasizes that the Metro Council has great influence on local communities and governments in the areas of:

  • Community Livability
  • Farmland, open spaces, wildlife habitat , and regional parks
  • Economic development and jobs through infrastructure, regional destinations for tourism and entertainment and quality of the environment
  • Road and transportation system

“There is a critical need for governments to work together to solve problems as we navigate through a complicated present into a changing future. There has never been a more important time for governments to collaborate and for elected representatives to stay connected and to engage and listen to citizens and business leaders.

I expect this to be a competitive race for a job in an organization that is often misunderstood, in a time when all governments must be more transparent, responsible and accessible”

Shirley Craddick has served on the Gresham City Council since 2005 and was re-elected in 2008.  Some of her endorsements include Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis, Portland City Commissioner, Randy Leonard, State Senator, Laurie Monnes Anderson, and state representative, Nick Kahl.

She is a retired Registered Dietitian and was a health researcher at Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research for almost 33 years. During her tenure she was involved in the design and implementation of multi-site behavioral clinical trials funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She is an author and co-author of scientific articles and books regarding the relationship of diet and cardiovascular disease.

Shirley holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics and Institutional Management from Oregon State University.  She received her R.D. (Registered Dietitian) from Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio and her Masters degree in Health Administration from the University of Southern California.

She is the past president of both the Oregon Dietetic Association and the Portland Dietetic Association.

Some of her most recent public service activities include:

  • 2007 Council President
  • City of Gresham Planning Commission, Council liaison
  • Natural Resources and Sustainability Council Advisory Committee, Council liaison
  • Urban Forestry Council Advisory Committee, Council liaison
  • Parks and Recreation Council Advisory Committee, Council liaison
  • Council representative to the Regional Water Providers Consortium
  • Council alternate to the Metro Policy Advisory Committee (MPAC)
  • Mt. Hood Cable Regulatory Commission, Council liaison

Councilor Craddick is married to Richard Craddick, retired Assistant Superintendent of the David Douglas School District. She and Dick have lived in Gresham since 1979. They have two daughters, one married, and two grandchildren. Councilor Craddick is an avid runner competing in road races for over 33 years including many Hood to Coast Relays.

Metro is a regional government created by the legislature and provides regional transportation planning, regional convention center operations, solid waste services, operation of the zoo, exposition center, performing arts centers and operation of the system of regional parks and open spaces.  Metro services the urban growth areas of Multnomah, Clackamas and Washington Counties. The position is currently held by Rod Park who is subject to term limits at the end of 2010.
