Duke Shepard concedes Metro District #1 election to Shirley Craddick
– by Shirley Craddick
My campaign has withheld any public statement on this matter pending verification from Multnomah County Elections on the status of the ballot in November regarding Metro District #1, and Duke Shepard withdrawing from the race. It has now been confirmed that my name will be the only one on the ballot.
On Thursday night, June 10th, I received a very gracious phone call from Duke Shepard. He congratulated me on my victory in the May 18th primary election for Metro District Council position #1. He also indicated that he was withdrawing from the general election in November.
On Friday June 11th he sent out an email announcing that fact, and posted it on his website. http://www.dukeshepard.com
Duke, as well as Chris Gorsek and Jeff Reynolds were worthy opponents. I think we all ran classy campaigns, with no negative aspersions against each other. That in and of itself, is refreshing in this political climate. We each had our viewpoints, and made our case. The voters made the final decision. It is how things should be. Duke, Chris, and Jeff, are all worthy candidates going forward, and deserve the consideration of voters in future elections, if they choose to run. Anyone who runs a clean campaign based on their views and the issues, deserves the respect and consideration of the voters. Duke especially in conceding this victory has shown great class and respect for the voters and the political process. I wish him the best going forward.
As for my victory, I wish to thank the voters of Metro District #1 for their trust and respect. I especially thank those who worked on my campaign and supported me. I am humbled by this honor, and pledge that I will work for Metro District #1 with all my energy in the next four years.
I now turn to the transition that will lead to me assuming the leadership of our district in January, 2011. I will continue to spend time this summer knocking on doors and having conversations with voters. I feel this has been my best preparation. I have gained great insight into the priorities of the people who live and work in our district through that process.
Beyond that, I will begin creating a coalition here in District 1 that will be a major factor in the region going forward. I think there are great times ahead for our district.
