Today, I filed for re-election for Metro Council District 1. I am flattered to have been elected twice to this position, but this will be my final term. Much has been accomplished, but there is more to do before I leave office.
Twice since I have been in office voters have invested in parks, trails and natural areas to make sure we have clean water, healthy habitat for fish and wildlife, and more opportunities to connect with nature.
We are building the first bus rapid transit that will connect Portland and Gresham… a faster and more reliable bus system that the 10,000+ daily riders can depend on.
It is wonderful that many new businesses have located in the east part of the metro area, particularly in the new business parks in Gresham, Troutdale and along the Columbia Corridor, but we need more. The land is available, but not ready for development. There is work to do so more businesses will call this part of the region home.
The word is out, the metro area is a wonderful place to live. So how do we make sure that there is enough housing, housing that we can all afford? We are working with our partners across the region to find opportunities for innovative approaches, so more people are able to find a home that meets their needs, and that they can afford.
Our region is poised to attract international events and draw more tourism dollars by the addition of a state of the art convention center hotel! The east part of the region is a beautiful area and we want it to be a tourism destination.
I have always said our progress is measured not by who we are, but by the fulfillment of our collective potential. Over the last seven years we have made great progress, and yet we can do so much more, together!
I have never been more confident that despite our troubles, our political differences and the great challenges we face, together we can create for our children and grandchildren the best region. Safer cities, cleaner neighborhoods, and a brighter, more prosperous and hopeful outlook, by simply moving forward together!
I would be honored to have your support.
